Live-in Companionship at Home

A carefully matched companion who lives in your home, offering company, household help and the reassurance of someone there day and night.

An alternative to moving

For many people, the thought of leaving a much-loved home is far harder than any practical difficulty. Live-in companionship lets you stay among your own things, in your own neighbourhood, with your garden, pets and routines intact, while someone kind and capable shares the house with you.

Your live-in companion runs the household alongside you: shopping, cooking, laundry and keeping the house in order. They keep you company, drive you to see friends, accompany you to appointments and are simply there, which for many families is the greatest relief of all.

What live-in companionship includes

  • Company and conversation throughout the day, and someone in the house at night
  • Planning and cooking meals, food shopping and keeping the kitchen stocked
  • Housekeeping, laundry and keeping on top of post and household jobs
  • Driving to appointments, church, clubs and family visits (using your car or theirs)
  • Care of pets and the garden, and liaising with tradespeople
  • Regular updates for family members, with the client’s consent

What it does not include

Live-in companionship through Livingsupported does not include personal care, such as help with washing, dressing, continence or administering medication. If those needs arise, we can introduce you to a CQC-registered live-in care provider, or a registered domiciliary agency can visit for personal care while your companion continues to support the household.

Arranging a live-in companion

We start with an unhurried home visit to understand routines, the layout of the home (a live-in companion needs their own bedroom), interests and the kind of person who would fit. We then introduce one or two companions for you to meet before anything is agreed. Companions work a rota with planned breaks, and a familiar relief companion covers time off.

About our service: Livingsupported provides non-regulated companionship, home help and lifestyle support. We do not provide personal care (such as help with washing, dressing, toileting or giving medication), nursing or medical care, and we are not registered with the Care Quality Commission. If personal or clinical care is needed, we will help you find a registered provider and can work alongside them.

Where we provide this service

We visit clients across South Manchester and Trafford, Cheshire and Staffordshire, including Hale, Bowdon, Altrincham, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Prestbury, Knutsford and Eccleshall.

Frequently asked questions

Does a live-in companion need their own room?

Yes. A live-in companion needs a private bedroom and access to a bathroom, plus regular breaks during the day and an uninterrupted night’s sleep in most arrangements.

Is live-in companionship the same as live-in care?

No. Live-in care includes personal care and must be provided by a CQC-registered organisation. Live-in companionship covers company, household support and reassurance, without personal care.

Can couples share a live-in companion?

Yes. Supporting a couple in their own home is often one of the most rewarding arrangements, as it keeps them together and independent.

Can it be short term?

Yes. Some families arrange live-in companionship for a few weeks after a hospital stay, while a family carer is away, or during a house move.
