Companionship for People Living with Dementia

Calm, patient and familiar company that helps people living with memory loss enjoy each day, while giving families much-needed reassurance and time.

Familiarity matters

For someone living with dementia, seeing the same kind face at the same time each week can be deeply reassuring. Our companions get to know each person’s life story, favourite music and the routines that help them feel settled, and use that knowledge to make visits calm and enjoyable.

What our companions do

  • Meaningful activity: music, photographs, gardening, baking and gentle walks
  • Keeping a familiar routine and a comfortable, uncluttered home
  • Prompts to eat and drink, and preparing simple meals
  • Company on outings, including dementia-friendly cafés and singing groups
  • Reminders about the day’s plans, using calendars and memory aids
  • Updates for the family and a consistent point of contact

Working alongside other support

Companionship complements, rather than replaces, medical and personal care. As needs change, people living with dementia may need help with washing, dressing or medication from a CQC-registered care provider. We are happy to work alongside them and the person’s GP and memory service. Excellent independent advice is available from Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia UK (including Admiral Nurses) and the NHS dementia guide.

Training and approach

Companions who support clients living with dementia receive dementia awareness training and are matched carefully for patience and temperament. We keep visits unhurried; our minimum visit is two hours so there is never a need to rush.

About our service: Livingsupported provides non-regulated companionship, home help and lifestyle support. We do not provide personal care (such as help with washing, dressing, toileting or giving medication), nursing or medical care, and we are not registered with the Care Quality Commission. If personal or clinical care is needed, we will help you find a registered provider and can work alongside them.

Where we provide this service

We visit clients across South Manchester and Trafford, Cheshire and Staffordshire, including Hale, Bowdon, Altrincham, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Prestbury, Knutsford and Eccleshall.

Frequently asked questions

Can you support someone in the later stages of dementia?

We provide companionship and household support. In later stages, people usually need personal care from a registered provider. We can continue companionship alongside that care, which many families find valuable.

Do you help with medication for someone with dementia?

We can remind and prompt, but we cannot administer medication. A pharmacist can advise on blister packs and reminder devices.

Will it be the same companion each visit?

Yes. Consistency is especially important for people living with dementia, so we keep the same companion and a familiar back-up.
