Grief and Bereavement: What to Expect and How to Cope
A gentle, plain-English guide to grief after the death of someone close, what is normal, and where to find support.
In short
- Grief is how we react when someone we love dies.
- It can bring sadness, anger, guilt, numbness or even relief. All of these are normal.
- Cruse Bereavement Support is free to call: 0808 808 1677.
There is no right way to grieve
Grief affects everyone differently. Some people cry a lot; others feel numb. Feelings can come in waves, triggered by a song, a date or an ordinary moment. Grief does not follow neat stages, and it does not have a deadline.
Common experiences
- Trouble sleeping or eating
- Feeling tired, forgetful or unable to concentrate
- Talking to the person who has died, or sensing them nearby
- Guilt about things said or not said
- Worry about the future and practical matters
What can help
- Talking about the person you have lost, with people who knew them
- Keeping some routines, and allowing new ones
- Marking special dates in a way that feels right
- Being kind to yourself on hard days
When to ask for more help
If after some months you feel unable to function day to day, or you feel hopeless, talk to your GP. If you are thinking about ending your life, call Samaritans on 116 123 at any time.
The NHS guide to grief and loss and Cruse both offer clear, kind guidance.
Practical support
See our guide to practical steps after someone dies. Our household support can help with errands, paperwork and keeping the home running while you grieve.
