Practical Steps After Someone Dies: A Simple Checklist

A step-by-step checklist of the practical tasks after a death in England, with links to official GOV.UK guidance.

In short

  • Registering the death is usually the first step. In England this is normally within 5 days.
  • The Tell Us Once service lets you inform many government departments at the same time.
  • You do not have to do everything at once. Ask for help.

In the first few days

  1. Get the medical certificate from the doctor or hospital.
  2. Register the death at the register office, normally within 5 days in England.
  3. Contact a funeral director if you are arranging a funeral.
  4. Look for a will, which may name the executor and funeral wishes.

Telling organisations

The Tell Us Once service informs most government departments, such as the DWP, HMRC and the DVLA, in one go. You will still need to contact banks, pension providers, utility companies, insurers and landlords yourself.

Looking after the home

  • Keep the property secure and heated in winter
  • Redirect post if needed
  • Look after pets and plants
  • Cancel regular deliveries and subscriptions
