Preventing Falls at Home: A Practical Guide
Simple steps to reduce the risk of falls at home for older people, and what to do if a fall happens.
In short
- Many falls can be prevented.
- Clear clutter, use good lighting and wear well-fitting shoes.
- If you fall and cannot get up, call for help. Keep a phone or alarm within reach.
Why falls matter
Falls are a common reason older people lose confidence or need hospital care. Many are preventable with small changes at home and staying active.
Around the home
- Remove trailing cables, loose rugs and clutter on floors and stairs
- Use bright bulbs and night lights on stairs and landings
- Fit grab rails by the bath, toilet and steps
- Keep things you use often within easy reach
- Wipe up spills straight away
Looking after yourself
- Wear well-fitting shoes and slippers with a grip
- Have your eyes tested regularly
- Ask your GP or pharmacist to review medicines that make you dizzy
- Stay active to keep strength and balance; ask your GP about strength and balance classes
If you fall
Stay calm, check whether you are hurt and get up slowly only if you can. If not, call for help, keep warm and move gently to stay comfortable. A personal alarm can give peace of mind. The NHS guide to falls has more advice.
Our home help companions keep homes tidy and clutter-free and can help with shopping and errands.
