Pets and Wellbeing in Later Life
How pets support wellbeing in older age, practical things to consider, and help with looking after a pet.
In short
- Pets bring company, routine and comfort.
- Think about cost, care and what happens if you go into hospital.
- Help is available with walking and vet visits.
The benefits
A pet gives a reason to get up, a routine and someone to talk to. Dog walks bring fresh air and chats with neighbours. Many people find stroking a cat or dog calming.
Things to think about
- Food, insurance and vet costs
- Energy and mobility for walks and care
- An older, calmer animal may suit better than a puppy or kitten
- A plan for who would care for the pet in an emergency
Getting help
Some charities help older owners care for their pets. The Cinnamon Trust supports older and terminally ill people with their pets.
Our lifestyle support includes dog walking and trips to the vet or groomer, so your pet can stay with you.
