Is Live-in Companionship Right for Your Parent?
What live-in companionship involves, who it suits, what it does not include, and how it compares with moving to a care home.
For an older person who is safe managing their own personal care but anxious being alone, or living in a large house a long way from family, a live-in companion can be the difference between staying at home and moving.
What a live-in companion does
A live-in companion shares the home and helps it run smoothly: cooking, shopping, laundry, housekeeping, driving to appointments and clubs, looking after pets and, above all, being there. Many families say the reassurance of someone in the house at night is the biggest benefit. Read more about our live-in companionship service.
Who it suits
- People who manage washing, dressing and medication themselves but no longer want to be alone
- Couples who want to stay together at home
- Rural homes where daily visits mean long journeys, such as villages around Eccleshall or Prestbury
- Short-term needs, such as the weeks after a hospital stay or while a family carer is away
What it does not include
Live-in companionship does not include personal care. If your parent needs help with washing, dressing, continence or medication, you need a CQC-registered live-in care provider, or a registered agency visiting alongside the companion.
Practical requirements
- A private bedroom for the companion and access to a bathroom
- Agreed daily breaks and a good night’s sleep in most arrangements
- Internet access, and clear house rules agreed at the start
Compared with moving
Staying at home keeps routines, neighbours, pets and memories intact. A care home offers round-the-clock personal and nursing care, which some people will need. The right choice depends on care needs, not just cost. Age UK has impartial guidance on comparing options.
