Feeling Lonely? Small Steps You Can Take Today

Simple, practical steps for older people who feel lonely, and where to find friendly contact by phone or in person.

In short

  • Feeling lonely is common. It is not your fault.
  • Small steps help: a phone call, a short walk, a chat.
  • You can call The Silver Line free, day or night, just to talk: 0800 4 70 80 90.

You are not alone in feeling alone

Many people feel lonely in later life, often after losing a partner, moving home, stopping driving or when family live far away. Loneliness is a feeling, not a failing, and it can change.

Small steps that make a difference

  • Talk to one person today. A neighbour, a shop assistant, a friend on the phone.
  • Plan something to look forward to. A coffee out, a club, a visit. Write it on the calendar.
  • Get outside if you can. Even ten minutes in a park or garden lifts mood.
  • Try a group once. Lunch clubs, church groups, U3A interest groups, libraries and community centres all welcome newcomers.
  • Use the phone or a tablet. A weekly call at a set time gives the week a shape.

If you are worried about someone else

Signs include not going out, losing interest in hobbies, not eating well or calling much more than usual. Our guide on spotting loneliness in an older parent explains more.

How a companion can help

Some people prefer regular company from the same friendly person. A companion can visit for conversation, outings and the things you enjoy.
