Eating and Drinking Well in Later Life
Simple advice on eating well, staying hydrated and spotting the signs of poor appetite or malnutrition in older people.
In short
- Eating regularly and drinking enough keeps you strong and well.
- Small, regular meals can be easier than big ones.
- If you are losing weight without trying, talk to your GP.
Why it matters
Appetite can fall with age, illness, low mood or living alone. Not eating or drinking enough can lead to tiredness, confusion, falls and slower recovery from illness.
Simple tips
- Eat little and often if big meals feel too much
- Keep easy, nourishing foods in: eggs, yoghurt, soup, cheese, tinned fish, fruit
- Have a drink with every meal and between meals
- Make mealtimes sociable where you can
- Batch cook and freeze portions for easy days
Warning signs
- Clothes or rings becoming loose
- An empty fridge or out-of-date food
- Dark urine, headaches or confusion, which can signal dehydration
