Company and Comfort for Someone in the Final Stages of Life
How families and companions can bring comfort and company to someone nearing the end of life, alongside their medical and nursing care.
In short
- When someone is nearing the end of life, company and comfort matter a great deal.
- Medical and nursing care comes from the GP, district nurses or a hospice.
- Families can get support too. The Marie Curie Support Line is 0800 090 2309.
Who provides care
Medical, nursing and personal care for someone at the end of life is provided by their GP, district nurses, hospice teams and registered care providers. Livingsupported does not provide this care. What families and companions can offer is presence, comfort and practical help around the home.
Simple ways to bring comfort
- Sitting quietly together, holding a hand
- Reading aloud, or playing favourite music
- Talking about happy memories, or listening when they want to talk
- Keeping the room calm, tidy and comfortable
- Letting friends know when visits are welcome
Looking after the family
Being with someone at the end of life is exhausting. Take breaks, accept help and eat and sleep when you can. A trusted sitting service can keep your loved one company while you rest, alongside the nursing team.
Marie Curie and local hospices offer advice and emotional support for families, including after a death.
